Azerbaijan relaunches high speed rail to northwestern Gazakh region Azerbaijan relaunches high speed rail to northwestern Gazakh region
Azerbaijan has relaunched high-speed trains between the capital Baku and the Gazakh region.
Bordering Armenia in the northwestern part of the country, the region is known for its spectacular landscapes and history. The journey will now take five hours and 36 minutes, down from eight hours and 25 minutes.
The train passes through Ganja, Azerbaijan’s third largest city, where you’ll be able to visit attractions like the Imamzadeh mosque and mausoleum complex, which dates back to the 8th century, and the Nizami mausoleum, which pays tribute to Azerbaijan’s well known 12th-century poet. The city also hosted the government of Azerbaijan’s first republic (1918-1920), and served as the 2016 European Youth Capital.
Shamkir, nicknamed the ‘greenhouse of Azerbaijan’, is also along the way. Known for its fresh fruit and vegetables, restaurants here are a great place to discover the national form of folk music, ashug.
You can book your tickets via the Azerbaijan Railways website or app.
The news comes after Azerbaijan relaunched its Baku–Balakan sleeper trains earlier this year. The route allows visitors to explore Sheki, which is home to one of the country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The historic centre has its origins in the 6th century BCE and formed part of the Silk Road, and was listed by UNESCO thanks to its unique architecture which reflects Safavid, Qadjar and Russian building traditions.
Wanderlust named Azerbaijan as one of the destinations in our 2025 Good To Go List, thanks to the launch of a number of new direct flights and new attractions like the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex.
